About Acne

Acne is a common skin condition characterized by outbreaks of lesions better known as pimples or zits. These skin lesions include everything from whiteheads and blackheads to more deeply lodged cysts, and are all the result of clogged pores. Acne typically develops on the face, neck, back, chest and shoulders. Acne is rarely a serious medical condition, though in some cases it may lead to scarring of the skin and can be emotionally stressful.

You Are Not Alone

Nearly 17 million people in the United States have acne. The majority are teenagers.

Almost 85 percent of people with acne are between the ages of 15 and 24, and more than 40 percent of these young people have acne that is significant enough to require treatment from a dermatologist.

Although teen acne is common, many adults have acne too. A study in an issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology cited 54% of women and 40% of men suffer from acne. In fact, adult acne is on the rise, particularly among women.
